News International said Friday it will pay $3.2 million to the family of murdered British schoolgirl Milly Dowler whose mobile phone was hacked by the News of the World tabloid.
News International and the family of Milly Dowler confirmed the settlement.
In a statement, the two parties said Murdoch also will donate $1.6 million (1 million pounds) to charities chosen by the family.
Thirten-year-old British girl Milly Dowler disappeared in 2002 and was later found murdered.
