IndieGames.com - The Weblog Indie Game Pick: Hard Reset (Flying ...

Hard Reset is what I would class as a 'ruddy nice surprise'. That's nothing to do with the quality of the game - it's been developed by a group of ex-AAA industry veterans, so it was always going to look the part (and believe me, it's gorgeous in motion). It's more the fact that developer Flying Wild Hog only revealed itself and its game in July of this year, and less than two months later this fully fledged shooter is already at our fingertips. And it's a PC exclusive!

Do you like shooting things? How about really big and unnecessary explosions? Killer robots? Hard Reset has all of these things, and never lets you forget it. You play as Major Fletcher as he attempts to stop an army of nasty robots from destroying the last human city on the planet. It's cyberpunk, it's sci-fi, and it's a balls to the wall blast-fest that will see you holding the trigger down more often than not.

There are some really lovely ideas piled into Hard Reset. Whenever you use a computer, or interact with an object in the world, everything happens on the fly, rather than jumping to a menu system, or different interface, or a cutscene. For example, get close enough to a computer screen, and your reticle will become a mouse pointer on the screen, with which you can interact with the console.

The story is pretty much your standard 'Grr I'm a tough cop with a gruff voice and I'm going to shoot my gun at thing and swear lots!', but it's told through a comic strip style of cutscene, which is pretty neat.

I only have two real concerns. One is the save system, which only lets you save at intervals, meaning you can potentially die and have to repeat the last 10 minutes of play. This will annoy some people, others won't mind as much. The other issue is the price, especially when you consider that the game is about 5 hours long. Again, it's a factor that's bound to put some people off. You can pre-order Hard Reset on Steam now, and it's released tomorrow.
