UN's Ban seeks lifeline to flagging Cyprus talks (Reuters)

MANHASSET, New York (Reuters) ? U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon will attempt to throw a lifeline to flagging Cyprus peace talks on Sunday, calling a two-day meeting with its rival leaders to end a deadlock in a dispute harming Turkey's EU entry bid and energy projects in the eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus, with a combined population of around one million people, was torn asunder in a Turkish invasion in 1974 triggered by a brief Greek inspired coup. The conflict, a significant source of tension between NATO allies Greece and Turkey, is thrown into sharper focus by Ankara's attempts to join the EU and a simmering dispute over Mediterranean hydrocarbon riches.

Switching from the normal abode of peace talks at an abandoned airport compound on the scorchingly hot island to a secluded woodlands retreat blanketed by snow on Long Island, the United Nations is hoping the consultations will end a logjam and pave the way forward in a conflict which has long defied mediation.

"We will use this meeting for them to make their case that they have a way to solve divergences on core issues, that this is not a complete deadlock," said a diplomat close to the process.

Ban, together with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, made a brief public appearance on Sunday for photos. They did not make any comment.

Ban's stated intention when calling the meeting last July 7, that of reporting agreement on outstanding issues, has not materialized. He was likely to give them more time to resolve differences, diplomats said.

Cyprus's reunification process has stumbled on complex issues such as future co-governance under a federal system, an issue one source said was on the agenda of the two-day meeting.

Both communities now run their affairs - Greek Cypriots as the official representatives of the whole of Cyprus and Turkish Cypriots, whose self-governing enclave is not internationally recognized.

Although festering for years, diplomats say they want a deal by the time Cyprus assumes the EU presidency in July 2012, worried that Turkey will sever already troubled ties altogether with the bloc. Ankara does not have diplomatic relations with Cyprus's internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government, which represents the whole island in the EU.

Ankara also opposes attempts by Greek Cypriots to drill for gas south of the island, saying it risks derailing the peace process. U.S. based Noble Energy started drilling for natural gas south of Cyprus in September and Cypriot officials say there are encouraging indications of large gas deposits.

Ban was due to spend several hours with Eroglu and Christofias at the secluded Greentree Estate on Long Island on Sunday and Monday. A team led by U.N. envoy Alexander Downer was to hold proximity talks with the delegates for the rest of the time, a source familiar with consultations said.

The sides agree in principle on reunifying the island as a two-zone federation with a strong central government, but on little else. There are deep rooted disputes on governance, particularly focused on how future leaders will be elected and by whom, property rights of thousands of internally displaced people and redrawing territorial boundaries between the two sides.

German Finance Minister Sch?uble Calls for a Eurozone Tobin Tax

A key German finance leader is talking tough about financial reform. But will his peers follow?

Wolfgang Sch?uble, in a Financial Times interview, called for a Tobin tax to discourage speculation. Sch?uble urged the EU to proceed with the idea even if England balked.

That?s a sound move, since in too many markets, transaction costs have gotten to be so low that the ratio of real-economy related activity to mere opportunistic trading has gotten badly out of whack. The classic example is high frequency trading, where speculators add liquidity when it isn?t particularly needed, and withdraw it in a destabilizing manner at the first sign of trouble.

Readers may argue that banks will innovate around such a tax, but they miss crucial chokepoints that regulators have and have not yet used. All major banks that play in the Euro need direct access to payment facilities, and ultimately, payment systems controlled by the ECB. The big payments are almost all related to securities transactions; Perry Mehrling, in an interview, estimated the securities-related volumes as over 50X the real economy activity. A major bank can?t afford to go through correspondents; both the transaction costs and the detrimental impact as far as corporate customers are concerned would be too great (I looked into this issue over two decades ago for a major Japanese bank; these issues would be even more acute now given the much greater importance of capital markets related activities to all banks). And Mehrling claims (and I haven?t yet found any evidence to the contrary) that banks can?t innovate around the need for direct access to central bank payment facilities. Since any global bank worth its salt has to do business in the euro, the ECB could well impose global rules relating to activity in the euro, including a transaction tax. That is not how we have tended to think of regulatory reach, but recall how the Fed acted as the dollar dealer of the last resort by extending currency swap lines during the crisis. No banking authority should be in the position of backstopping activity or institutions (in the Feds? case, Eurobanks) that it does not supervise.

I doubt the Sch?uble proposal will go far; there are too many well placed bankers who will have their knives out. But I hope he and others push hard on this idea, particularly since the odds of a Euro-centered financial crisis are high. It is important to keep pushing proposals for serious reform so that they will have been debugged via having objections raised and dealt with, and will gain legitimacy through greater exposure. The most important ones are those that have the potential to change the architecture of the financial system, and a well-designed Tobin tax would force banks to redesign their institutions in a major way.

DeMarco MurrayAP

Last week, rookie DeMarco Murray had the best single day for any Cowboys running back in franchise history.? But with Tashard Choice suddenly gone and Felix Jones out with an ankle injury, the Cowboys are taking a significant risk by making Murray the lead dog.

Murray had more than his share of injuries during four years at Oklahoma, and the inability of a tailback to show durability at the college level usually translates to an inability to stay healthy at the NFL level, given that he?s being hit by much bigger and stronger and faster grown men in the pro game.

In his redshirt freshman year of 2007, Murray suffered a dislocated kneecap late in the season, missed the rest of the campaign, and also was unavailable for spring practice.? In 2008, he suffered a hamstring injury during the opening kickoff of the Big 12 championship and missed the BCS title game a month later.? Even last year, when he started 14 games, there were questions about his availability for the Big 12 championship game due to a knee injury.? That could be one of the reasons why Murray, who rushed for 1,214 yards last season, was on the board in round three of the April draft.

?People always want to mention the injuries, but I missed four games in four years and that was in the beginning of my career, and I had no [serious] problems after that,? Murray said in April, via Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News.

Still, when Murray showed up for work after the lockout, he started his career on the non-football injury list with a hamstring problem.

Though it doesn?t mean Murray will shatter or otherwise break tonight against the Eagles, it means that he?s likely not destined to become the next Emmitt Smith, whose best attribute wasn?t blazing speed or uncanny elusiveness but an ability to suit up and play ? and play hard ? every Sunday for years and years.

And if Murray goes down tonight against the Eagles, the only other option will be undrafted Phillip Tanner, who as Peter King pointed out during Saturday?s Notre Dame halftime update never rushed for more than 1,000 yards in four seasons at Middle Tennessee State.

King also pointed out that the decision to dump Choice was fueled by the fact that he doesn?t play special teams ? and by a perception that he was moping this week after Murray?s 253-yard breakout performance against the Rams.

Cowboys fans will be moping if/when Murray?s breakout is followed by a breakdown of his body.

Mother accused of abusing, abandoning disabled son (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? A Colorado mother is accused of locking her 14-year-old developmentally disabled son inside a squalid trailer, feeding him just four meals a week, then abandoning him to take a trip with her boyfriend, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Amanda Jolliff, 36, is charged with false imprisonment, child abuse, and at-risk neglect of her son, discovered to be living in a rodent-infested mobile home in Erie, Colorado, northwest of Denver, according to a statement from the Weld County District Attorney's Office.

Her live-in boyfriend, Richard Smith, 31, also was charged, it said. They were jailed on $20,000 bond each.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, police were called to the mobile home park last month after a neighbor found the boy, who was not identified, hiding underneath his porch with his mother nowhere to be seen.

The neighbor said Jolliff and Smith had taken a bus to New York two weeks earlier, and others who lived at the home had moved away, leaving the boy to fend for himself.

When police searched the home, they found mice scurrying throughout the residence and "detected an overpowering odor of animal urine and feces," according to the affidavit.

Inside the home were two dogs, a macaw, two cockatiels, a cockatoo, two ducks and four toads, police said.

The boy told police his mother would lock him inside his room, letting him out just to clean up after the ducks. He said that since 2008 he was fed spaghetti or macaroni just four times a week.

Police said the boy's bedroom window was boarded up, and there was an outside lock on his bedroom door. Inside the pantry, police said they found bags of spaghetti noodles that had been chewed open by mice and contaminated with droppings.

The boy said he was supposed to be home-schooled but that he had not received any education since his mother removed him from public school three years ago.

When Jolliff was located by police and questioned, she admitted to locking up the boy because he would run away and "used to irritate me really bad," the affidavit said.

Review: Lepage offers eye-popping 3-D `Siegfried' (AP)

NEW YORK ? Welcome to the 3-D "Siegfried" ? and we're not just talking about the dwarfs, the dragon and Deborah Voigt.

Sure, all of them were onstage Thursday night as the Metropolitan Opera premiered the third installment of Robert Lepage's production of Wagner's "Ring" cycle.

But the Canadian director has found a new technological trick to make this latest effort unique: computerized projections that interact with the set and create an optical illusion that we are watching the singers against a living, three-dimensional backdrop.

The basic set remains the same as in "Das Rheingold" and "Die Walkuere" ? a 45-ton "Machine" composed of two dozen giant planks that rotate (still too noisily!) on a single axis and move up and down to form various shapes: a stand of trees, a mountainside, the roof of a cave.

Now the 3-D projections can lend this metallic surface an appearance of depth and movement. Thus, in the brooding opening measures of Acts 1 and 2, snakes and other creepy-crawly creatures really seem to be writhing through a thickly wooded terrain. Later, the rocks that form the dragon's lair appear to jut out in front of us. And ? most magically of all ? the forest bird who sings to Siegfried flies through the air and lands on the branches of trees.

All this with no glasses required!

Lepage has been criticized in previous installments for allowing his massive set to circumscribe the movements of the singers. That's still true to some extent, though he may be learning from his mistakes.

The Act 1 forest cave where Mime the dwarf has reared the young hero Siegfried is scrunched back on one side into a trough behind the apron (similar to Hunding's hut in Act 1 of "Die Walkuere"). It lessens the impact of the climactic sword-forging scene and means that to move between the cave and a hillside, the singers have to keep climbing up and down an awkward set of steps.

But in Acts 2 and 3, Lepage opens up the apron, giving room for more natural interplay among the characters. As a result, the final scene ? in which Siegfried climbs through a ring of magic fire to awaken the sleeping Bruennhilde on a mountaintop ? is both visually stunning and dramatically engrossing, even without any 3-D.

Musically, by far the most noteworthy ingredient of the night was the astonishing playing by the orchestra as led by Fabio Luisi, the Met's new principal conductor.

In the first two acts, Luisi wove an elegant, chamber music-like texture with brisk tempos that made clear how closely this opera resembles the scherzo of a symphony. In the final act, when Wagner's orchestration thickens, Luisi elicited magnificent waves of sound without sacrificing individual detail.

Luisi took over conducting duties for ailing music director James Levine, who has done so much to build the orchestra into one of the finest in the world. Levine still hopes to conduct three complete "Ring" cycles in the spring, but if he cannot, it's now clear the project will be in terrific hands.

Another late replacement was the singer cast in the title role ? and here the news was almost as good. American tenor Jay Hunter Morris does not possess the lung power of a true Wagnerian heldentenor, but his bright, lyrical voice and winning stage presence made him a most appealing young Siegfried. To say that he got through the long evening with little sign of vocal fatigue is high praise indeed.

As his newly awakened bride, Voigt did not fare as well. The role of Bruennhilde in "Siegfried" is brief but unforgiving: She appears only in the last scene, but then is immediately called upon to pour out waves of sound, much of it in the upper range of the soprano voice.

Voigt approached her assignment earnestly but with noticeable caution, and she struggled to reach those high Cs.

Repeating his role as Wotan (now renamed the Wanderer), bass-baritone Bryn Terfel brought a world-weary majesty to the role and successfully punched through the heavy orchestration in Act 3, though he seemed at the limit of his powers and once or twice resorted to a kind of bluster.

Tenor Gerhard Siegel was a Mime to treasure, his performance full of little grace notes (such as his turning tongue-tied when he tries to ask the Wanderer the final question in their riddle game.)

In smaller roles, bass-baritone Eric Owens reprised his incisive portrayal of Alberich, Mime's brother; bass Hans-Peter Koenig sang imposingly as Fafner, the giant-turned-dragon; and soprano Mojca Erdmann was a bright-sounding forest bird.

Mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon struggled at both ends of her register in Erda's brief scene, theatrically the weakest of the night. Lepage seemed uncertain what to make of the mystical earth goddess, and it didn't help that her metallic dress reflected blinding flashes of light into the audience.

With only one more piece to come ? "Goetterdaemmerung" premieres in January ? it's clear that Lepage has given the Met a technological marvel. What remains to be seen is whether he can end on a high note and, perhaps by some retooling of the earlier installments, shape this "Ring" into vibrant music drama as well.

H&M's 'slightly absurd' Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fashion line (The Week)

New York ? The Swedish retailer will soon flood stores with clothes inspired by edgy heroine Lisbeth Salander. Brilliant marketing ? or just strange?

The image:?The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star?Rooney Mara is already making fashion waves for her?magazine photo spreads?in costume as bisexual, computer-hacking heroine Lisbeth Salander, sporting the character's punk-goth wardrobe, severely cropped hair, and bleached blond eyebrows. Now,?Swedish clothier H&M has?announced?that?fashionistas around the world will be able to emulate Salander's style, too. H&M's?new fashion line, inspired by the upcoming film adaptation of Steig Larsson's best-selling murder mystery,?will be sold in select H&M stores and online starting Dec. 14, a week before the film debuts. The collection of tattered jeans and cropped leather jackets was conceptualized by the movie's costume designer, Trish Summerville, who calls it a "more fashionable version" of the film's wardrobe. (See an image below.)

The reaction: These clothes really do produce that "quintessential Lisbeth look," says Christopher Rosen at Moviefone, though her "bleached eyebrows, tattoos, and piercings" are probably not included. It at least "makes perfect cross-promotional sense," says Sarah Anne Hughes at The Washington Post. Once the film hits theaters, girls everywhere will likely be inspired to ape Salander's fierceness. Still, the line is "slightly absurd" ? Salander isn't exactly a "fashionista." And let's be honest, says Kevin Jagernauth at Indie Wire. More-or-less identical clothes can be found on "your average rack at Hot Topic." See for yourself:

Justin Timberlake goes rogue for "In Time" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Justin Timberlake may be riding a new wave of movie stardom as his new film, "In Time," sees its release in theaters on Friday, but the singer-dancer-actor still thinks he's an ordinary man.

Timberlake takes the lead role in the sci-fi, action thriller in which director Andrew Niccol takes audiences into a world where time has become the monetary currency.

"I found it (the movie) to be very provocative and it made me ask a lot of questions about myself, some of it which I still haven't come up with the answers for, but I like when a movie does that," "The Social Network" actor told Reuters.

In a world where everyone stops physically aging at 25, Timberlake's character, Will Salas, often finds himself with just 24 hours to live, in which he must find ways to earn time in order to prolong his life.

"I admired Will, I hope I would fight back the way he does," said Timberlake. "I've never gotten to play a character that I wanted to be like, I don't think, so I was eager to run in his shoes."

The 30-year-old "Sexyback" singer has been in the public eye since childhood as lead singer of boy-band juggernaut N*Sync in the 1990s, before shedding his child-star image to become a Grammy-winning solo artist and Hollywood heartthrob. Yet, he doesn't see himself as all that different than the kid who was born in Memphis, Tennessee.

"I think I've always looked at myself as an ordinary guy who gets to be in extraordinary situations," said the actor.

"Extraordinary" is an understatement. He has conquered pop music, moved into fashion and is doing his best to become a Hollywood movie star. He's doing a good job of it, too.

Timberlake has managed his ascendancy carefully, working in supporting roles in high-profile, low-budget movies like "Alpha Dog," voicing a role in animated "Shrek the Third," then breaking through in a key role in last year's award-winning "The Social Network."

This year, he starred in comedy "Bad Teacher" and alongside Mila Kunis in romance "Friends With Benefits." Timberlake is now setting his sights on being an action hero with "In Time."

FIGHTING TIME, SAVING WORLD

The world of "In Time" sees 'time' bartered for goods and services. Time can be given, received and stolen just by people locking arms with each other.

When Timberlake's character, Will, is given a windfall of 'time' from a wealthy person, he finds himself fighting against social boundaries and injustice in a city where inhabitants are segregated by time zones according to their level of wealth.

"The concept is pretty extreme and it's hard to take that idea and actually ground it to a point where you can actually do it and make it relevant to our society," said "Mamma Mia" actress Amanda Seyfried, who plays his love interest Sylvia.

The film has been compared to 1997's "Gattaca," which Niccol directed and 1998's "The Truman Show," which Niccol produced, both films presenting a future world that doesn't veer too far from present day.

"Andrew has this ability to toss you into another world, but in a world where you see the metaphors of what's happening today and right now," said Timberlake.

The film's themes of wealth inequality may resonate with some present day audiences, and Timberlake found it "serendipitous" that the release of "In Time" coincided with the Occupy Wall Street protests taking place across the U.S.

"I would put Will in the 99 percentile that are protesting Wall Street and Occupy LA," said the actor, adding that the film also addressed the multi-billion dollar beauty industry.

The film has received mixed reviews ahead of its release. Variety's Peter DeBruge found that it took advantage of Timberlake's action-hero potential, but the director was "incredibly surface-oriented" in addressing the themes.

The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy said Timberlake "capably carries the film but a glint of true rebelliousness, of a slightly unhinged element in his character's makeup, could have nudged the performance to another level."

Arctic predators caught by camera traps

A gripping new set of photos from camera traps in the Alaskan Arctic catch animals in the carnivorous act of preying on the eggs and the young of nesting birds, showing how these predators may be benefitting and migratory birds suffering from human activity in the area.

The photos, some of them graphic depictions, were collected during the summers of 2010 and 2011 as part of the Wildlife Conservation Society's ongoing study of how energy development is affecting the region's ecology, including the birds that migrate to the region to nest during the brief Arctic summers.

"Pictures are worth a thousand words, and these photos speak volumes regarding the changing conditions that threaten migratory birds coming to the Arctic to breed," said WCS North America program director Jodi Hilty.

Benefits to predators
The camera traps were set up to identify nest-raiding predators near the Prudhoe Bay oil field and at a remote, undeveloped area near the Ikpikpuk River in the National Petroleum Reserve ? Alaska. Scientists hoped to learn whether "human-subsidized" predators (those, such as Arctic foxes, ravens, and glaucous gulls, that apparently benefit from human activity in the area) were raiding nests more often in the oilfields than in the remote areas. They recently reported that for some bird species, the rate of survival was indeed lower in the developed areas because of the increased presence of predators.

"The presence of people and structures enable these animals to live in areas that otherwise would not be preferred or suitable habitat, or to do so in greater numbers than would normally be the case. As a result, they have more access to the nests of migratory birds and can exploit a vulnerable food source," said WCS scientist Joe Liebezeit.

Predators find that human-made structures can provide them and their young with protective shelter. Arctic foxes, for example, den in culverts and under buildings in the oil fields. Ravens, which otherwise would not nest on the treeless tundra, are taking advantage of towers, eaves of buildings and other structures across the transformed landscape.

These "generalist" species also benefit by consuming the garbage, roadkill and other sources of food brought by human activity.

Bird threats
Each year, an international assemblage of migratory birds numbering in the millions flies to Alaska's Arctic to breed and rear young.

Wildlife Conservation Society scientists recently released findings that compared nest survivorship (production of young) and other nesting patterns in the Prudhoe Bay region with a site in the undeveloped Teshekpuk Lake area of the National Petroleum Reserve 150 miles to the west. They found that, for some species, survivorship and overall nest densities were higher at the undeveloped Teshekpuk site.

"The photos are also a reminder of the value of undeveloped areas in the Arctic to birds from all over the world," Hilty said in a statement.

Avon 3Q profit slips 1 percent; cancels outlook (AP)

NEW YORK ? Avon Products Inc. said Thursday that its net income fell 1 percent in the third quarter because implementing a software system in Brazil disrupted business there. The cosmetics direct seller withdrew its 2011 revenue outlook due to that and the uncertain economy.

The company also said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating its contact with financial analysts in 2010 and 2011 and matters related to Avon's own probe into bribery in China and other countries that began in 2008.

Results from Avon, whose brands include Skin-So-Soft and Anew lotions and Mark makeup, fell short of expectations and the stock slid $4.36, or 19 percent, to $18.66 in morning trading.

Due to the Brazil and the weak economy, Avon no longer expects to have mid-single digit revenue growth in 2011, said CEO Andrea Jung. She said the company is assessing its long-term business plan and will give an update in the first quarter of 2012.

Avon makes most of its revenue outside the U.S. In Latin America, which accounts for about half of Avon's revenue, revenue rose 11 percent. Revenue in Brazil rose 5 percent but declined 3 percent when currency effects were excluded. Revenue rose 17 percent in Mexico, or 12 percent stripping out the effect of a weaker U.S. dollar, and 22 percent in Venezuela.

Companies that sell goods internationally get a boost from a weaker dollar when they convert revenue in foreign currencies back into the dollar.

The problems in Brazil, usually a stronghold for Avon, stem from implementing an "enterprise resource planning" business management software system, which caused "greater disruptions than we anticipated," said CEO Andrea Jung.

After weak results in the third and fourth quarter of last year, Brazil had been recovering for the past two quarters, so the new problem is a blow to Avon. Analysts have questioned whether the problems in Brazil are actually site-specific or indicative of broader problems with Avon's strategy.

In North America, which accounts for about 18 percent of revenue, sales fell 7 percent.

Total units sold fell 5 percent during the quarter and the number of Avon's direct sellers was flat.

Avon cut prices during the recession to spur shoppers to buy its skin care and makeup products. But it has been increasing them recently to offset higher raw material costs. Costs rose during the July-September quarter, but were partly offset by higher selling prices and a weaker dollar, the company said.

The New York company's net income was $164.2 million, or 38 cents per share, in the July-September quarter. That's down from $166.7 million, or 38 cents per share, last year.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $2.76 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 46 cents per share on revenue of $2.83 billion, according to FactSet.

Beauty sales rose 8 percent, with gains in perfume, makeup, personal care products and skin care.

Separately, in an SEC filing, Avon said that on Wednesday it received a subpoena from the SEC for documents and info related to its contact with financial analysts and other financial executives in 2010 and 2011. The SEC also issued a formal order of investigation related to Avon's bribery probe in China, which began in 2008, is ongoing and has since spread to other countries, as well as the probe into its contact with financial analysts.

"At this point we are unable to predict the duration, scope, developments in, results of, or consequences of the internal investigation and compliance reviews and the SEC's investigation," the company said in the filing.

Avon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The X Factor" opens up voting to Twitter (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? In a first-ever move for television, Fox's new singing competition "The X Factor" is opening up its voting process to Twitter, the network announced Tuesday.

Immediately following the live performance show on November 2, fans will be able to register their votes by visiting the show's Twitter page and following @TheXFactorUSA.com. Viewers can then vote via private Direct Message. (Tweets themselves will not count as votes.) Much like in the sacred tradition of American democracy, votes will not be visible to the public.

In addition to Twitter votes, the show will enable fans to make their choice known through the Xtra Factor App on Verizon Android devices; toll-free calling; text message (for Verizon Wireless customers, anyway); at the show's Web site; and via Facebook, at the "X Factor" Facebook page.

Twitter voting and online voting will be limited to 50 votes per account user ID -- so, y'know, there's no chance of fans stuffing the ballot box or anything.

"I think it's fantastic that Verizon and 'The X Factor' are giving fans so many different ways to vote," "X Factor" executive producer and judge Simon Cowell said of the expanded voting options. "Launching touch screen voting on Verizon's The Xtra Factor App and the new voting on Twitter is really exciting, I love that the audience has more and more choice in the way that they can vote."

The Twitter communication will go both ways, with judges blasting tweets about new developments on the show, and Twitter data being broadcast on-air for viewers who prefer to watch the show through the antiquated technology of television.

I'm no saint, but I'm no racist

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:39 a.m. ET Oct. 26, 2011

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas says he is no saint but he did not direct any racist abuse toward Sevilla's Frederic Kanoute during a heated encounter on Saturday.

Kanoute and Fabregas were involved in an altercation which saw Kanoute sent off and Fabregas facing accusations he racially insulted the Mali striker.

While Fabregas immediately denied the reports on Twitter, on Wednesday the Spain international added: "Like every other football player, I'm no saint, but I never said anything racist and no one is saying any different."

Fabregas says he has already cleared the air with Kanoute.

In England, police are investigating Chelsea's John Terry following allegations he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match.

Turkey quake: boy waits and hopes (AP)

ERCIS, Turkey ? Oguz Isler was trapped for eight hours beneath the rubble of his home after a powerful earthquake that hit eastern Turkey. The 9-year-old was finally rescued, but on Tuesday he was waiting at the foot of the same pile of debris for news of his parents and of other relatives who remain buried inside.

Thousands of people spent a second night outdoors in cars or tents in near-freezing conditions, afraid to return to their homes following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that has been followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

The quake on Sunday knocked down more than 100 buildings in two cities and mud-brick homes in nearby villages, trapping dozens in mounds of concrete, twisted steel and construction debris and killing at least 366 people. Some 1,300 people were injured.

Searchers on Tuesday picked through the ruins in the cities of Ercis and Van in hopes of finding more survivors. Dogan news agency said rescuers had pulled five people out of the rubble alive in the early hours of Tuesday, although many more bodies were discovered.

In the hardest-hit city of Ercis, where some 80 buildings tumbled down, Isler waited calmly in front of what was left of the five-story apartment block that used to be his aunt's home. The city of 75,000, close to the Iranian border, lies in one of Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones.

Turkish rescue workers in bright orange jumpsuits and Azeri military rescuers in camouflage uniforms searched through the debris, using excavators, picks and shovels to look for Isler's mother and father and other relatives still inside.

Dogs sniffed for possible survivors in gaps that opened up as their work progressed.

"They should send more people," Isler said as he and other family members watched the rescuers.

Mehmet Ali Hekimoglu, a medic, said the dogs indicated that there were three or four people inside the building, but it was not known if they were alive.

The boy, his sister and a cousin were trapped in the building's third-floor stairway as they tried to escape when the quake hit. A steel door fell over him.

"I fell on the ground face down. When I tried to move my head, it hit the door," he said. "I tried to get out and was able to open a gap with my fists in the wall but could not move my body further. The wall crumbled quickly when I hit it."

"We started shouting: 'Help! We're here,'" he said. "They found us a few hours later, they took me out about 8 1/2 hours later. ... I was OK but felt very bad, lonely. ... I still have a headache, but the doctor said I was fine."

Isler's 16-year-old sister, Ela, and 12-year-old cousin, Irem were also saved.

"They took me out last because I was in good shape and the door was protecting me. I was hearing stones falling on it," said Isler.

TSX ends higher on earnings, Europe hopes (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Canadian stocks staged a late rally to close higher on Wednesday, shrugging off early losses, helped by encouraging third-quarter earnings and news from Europe about plans to tackle the region's debt crisis.

Markets responded positively to a report the euro zone will dip deeply into a $440 billion euro bailout fund, the details of which won't be revealed until November, according to a draft statement obtained by Reuters.

Still, analysts said the uncertainly about the outcome of the European summit was a weight on the market.

"On the one side you have the European headwinds that are negative and making the market very jittery," said Luciano Orengo, a portfolio manager at Manulife Asset Management. "On the other side you've been having third-quarter earnings that are coming in better than expected."

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index closed up 76.31 points, or 0.63 percent, to 12,186.06. That corrected a brief negative spell earlier in the day when the index weakened to 12,052.53.

Canadian National Railway Co among the most influential gainers, rising 1.9 percent to C$76.56, after reporting a 19 percent jump in quarterly profit late on Tuesday.

Energy and materials stocks, including miners, played the biggest role in leading the market higher.

Base-metal miners climbed more than 4 percent as copper prices rallied. Teck Resources climbed 4.2 percent to C$37.33, while First Quantum Minerals gained 8 percent to C$18.60.

Research In Motion was the biggest drag on the index, dropping 7.5 percent to C$20.89. The BlackBerry maker fell after delaying a software upgrade for its PlayBook tablet until February, months behind schedule.

Canadian telecoms were also down slightly, though Rogers Communications edged up 1.15 percent to C$35.93 after reporting a slightly higher adjusted profit.

Telus Corp was hardest hit, declining 1.7 percent to C$53.79.

"The earnings are coming through ... but the common theme is people are cautious about making strong projections going forward," said Peter Chandler, senior vice-president and director at Canaccord Wealth Management.

iPod Decade: The Life—and Impending Death—of a World-Changing Gadget

October 25, 2011 1:00 PM

On Oct. 23, 2001, Apple introduced its first portable music player, the iPod, to mixed reviews. Ten years and 315 million sales later, the iPod's influence on consumer technology is hard to overstate. But the iPod era is coming to a close. Smartphones with music and video players are replacing the iPod, along with the category it helped create.

Lady Liberty getting a high-tech makeover

Give me your tired, your poor ? your Internet-connected masses yearning to see.

Lady Liberty is getting high-tech gifts for her 125th birthday: webcams on her torch that will let viewers gaze out at New York Harbor and read the tablet in her hands or see visitors on the grounds of the island below in real time.

The five torch cams are to be switched on Friday during a ceremony to commemorate the dedication of the Statue of Liberty on Oct. 28, 1886. The ceremony caps a week of events centered around the historic date, including the debut of a major museum exhibition about poet Emma Lazarus, who helped bring the monument renown as the "Mother of Exiles."

Related: Statue of Liberty to close for yearlong repairs

The statue's webcams will offer views from the torch that have been unavailable to the public since 1916, said Stephen A. Briganti, the president of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation Inc.

"The statue is the most famous symbol in the world," he said. "Most of the people in the world have seen it, but they have not seen it like this. It will be a visit that so many people, including New Yorkers, have never taken before."

Through the webcams, Internet users around the world will have four views, including a high-quality, 180-degree stitched panorama of the harbor with stunning views of Ellis and Governors islands. They will be able to watch as ships go by Liberty Island and observe as the Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center goes up floor-by-floor in lower Manhattan. They can get a fish-eye look at the torch itself as it glows in the night.

The five cameras, which will be on 24 hours, seven days a week, were donated to the National Park Service by Earthcam Inc., a New Jersey-based company that manages webcams around the world.

The cameras put viewers on the balcony of the torch and high above the crown, said Brian Cury, the founder of Earthcam.

"This is not your dad's picture of the Statue of Liberty," he said. "This is not a view from a tourist helicopter. This is unique."

Friday's ceremony also will be marked by a water flotilla, actress Sigourney Weaver reading Lazarus' poem and a naturalization ceremony for 125 candidates for citizenship representing over 40 countries.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Sport divers go deep for trinkets and treasure

The recent discovery of a sunken British steam ship with 20 tons of silver might be a once-in-a-lifetime find. For recreational divers, though, there?s still plenty of treasure to hunt.

    2. Airline ancillary revenues expected to soar
    3. World's most entrancing islands
    4. Plane diverted over screaming passenger
    5. The best new attractions in Las Vegas

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, with ferry service available between Manhattan and Liberty Island. The interior of the statue ? from the pedestal down to the museum base ? will close after the 125th celebration for up to a year so that stairwells, elevators and mechanical systems can be upgraded. The park itself will remain open to visitors.

The statue, designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, was given by the French government to the U.S. as a token of friendship between the two countries and dedicated by President Grover Cleveland.

And while today it is known as a symbol of liberty for millions of refugees and exiles, initially the famous sonnet by Lazarus in the voice of the statue asking for "your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" did not appear on the statue. It was not until 1903 that "The New Colossus" was placed on the pedestal.

Lazarus is the subject of a new exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in lower Manhattan, which has views of Lady Liberty. It's to open Wednesday to coincide with the anniversary of the statue's dedication.

Curator Melissa Martens said Lazarus was born into the fourth generation of a Jewish family in New York prominent since colonial times. "They were some of the early people to articulate the Jewish experience in dialogue with the challenges of freedom and religious liberty," she said.

Featuring over 83 original objects from 27 institutions and individuals, "Poet of Exiles" is the first full-fledged artifact exhibit at a major museum to robustly explore the life of Lazarus, from her work as an advocate for immigrants fleeing the Russian pogroms of the early 1880s to her pioneering support for a Jewish homeland.

Lazarus died in 1887 at age 38 from Hodgkin's disease, never having known her poem would be united with the Statue of Liberty.

US senator talks about military options in Syria (AP)

SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan ? U.S. Senator John McCain said Sunday that military action to protect civilians in Syria might be considered now that NATO's air campaign in Libya is ending.

However, President Barack Obama's administration has made clear it has no appetite for military intervention in Syria ? a close ally of Iran that sits on Israel's border.

"Now that military operations in Libya are ending, there will be renewed focus on what practical military operations might be considered to protect civilian lives in Syria," McCain said at the World Economic Forum in Jordan. "The Assad regime should not consider that it can get away with mass murder. Gadhafi made that mistake and it cost him everything," he added, referring to ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi who was captured and killed last week by fighters loyal to the new government.

"Iran's rulers would be wise to heed similar counsel," McCain said.

It was not clear whether the Republican senator from Arizona was referring to American or NATO military action against the Syrian regime, which has waged a 7-month crackdown on opposition protesters and killed about 3,000 people, according to the U.N.

However, international intervention, such as the NATO action in Libya that helped topple Gadhafi, is all but out of the question in Syria. Washington and its allies have shown little inclination for getting involved militarily in another Arab nation in turmoil. There also is real concern that Assad's ouster would spread chaos around the region.

Syria is a geographical and political keystone in the heart of the Middle East, bordering five countries with which it shares religious and ethnic minorities and, in Israel's case, a fragile truce. Its web of alliances extends to Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah movement and Iran's Shiite theocracy. There are worries that a destabilized Syria could send unsettling ripples through the region.

McCain also warned Iran after it was accused in the United States of backing a plot never carried out to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the U.S.

"Their plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington has only reminded Americans of the threat posed by this regime, how it is killing Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting violent groups across the region, destabilizing Arab countries, propping up the Assad regime, seeking nuclear weapons, trampling on the dignity of Iran's people."

Iran has maintained its backing for Assad's regime, but has increasingly urged him to halt attacks on protesters and open dialogue seeking to end the unrest. Tehran has dismissed the U.S. allegations of the plot as "baseless" and has said it was willing to examine hard evidence that the U.S. claims links Tehran and the foiled assassination conspiracy.

Iranian officials have rejected tough talk from Washington as "rhetoric," saying the U.S. is not in a position to attack the Islamic Republic. The country regularly holds war games to showcase its capabilities in defending its nuclear facilities from possible attack.

The elite Revolutionary Guard, Iran's most powerful military force, has warned that there would be a strong Iranian response should the U.S. take military action against the country. Iran repeatedly has threatened to target Israel should the U.S. or Israel take military action against it.

McCain also accused Iran of trying to "hijack" the Arab Spring.

"No issue unifies the American people more than the need to protect our friends, our allies, our interests from the comprehensive threat posed by the Iranian regime. No one should test our resolve in this matter," McCain said.

"Not to say that American leadership is neither welcomed nor wanted in the Middle East today. To the contrary, as I travel across this region, I have met with heads of state, young democratic activists business leaders and nearly every single one wants more American leadership and not less."

PFT: Stafford 'day-to-day' with sprained ankle

Pittsburgh Steelers v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

Before the season started, we noted that the teams in the AFC North appeared to have an easy schedule.

They face the NFC West and AFC South out of division, which looked soft on paper. ?Usually ?on paper? doesn?t translate to reality, but it did this time around.

The NFC West and AFC South are the two worst divisions in football, despite the presence of the 49ers and Texans. ?ESPN?s John Clayton notes that?if the Jaguars lose tonight, the AFC South will have the worst out of division record in football at 5-16. ?The NFC West is next worse at 6-15.

It shouldn?t be a surprise, then, that every team in the AFC North is .500 or better. The division is home to one of the league?s biggest surprises (Cincy) and the worst 3-3 team we can remember. (Cleveland)

On top of that, the AFC North has the top four defenses in the league according to yards allowed. This is what happens when every team in the division gets to play the Seahawks, Jaguars, Colts, Cardinals, and Rams.

What does it all mean?

The AFC North division champion is almost a lock to get a playoff bye and could get the No. 1 seed. ?Second place in the division is very likely to go to the playoffs, and perhaps the Bengals could hang around the wild card race longer than expected.

So much of the NFL comes down to schedule, but it?s rarely talked about. We?ve heard a number of times this year how the Patriots won 11 games with Matt Cassel, but no one mentions how they faced one of the softest schedules in football that year.

It?s not like it?s the fault of the Ravens, Steelers, Browns, and Bengals. These things even out. It?s up to them to take advantage while they can.

Which reminds me: Are you ready for some football tonight? A Monday night blowout!

Deadly flooding in Central America: how people contributed to the tragedy

Hurricane Rina has formed off of the Caribbean coast of Central America as the region digs out from floods that killed more than 100 people. Guest blogger Tim Muth looks at the role that humans play in such tragedies.

The floods of this month in El Salvador were extraordinary. But when we look at the consequences of the floods, it is clear that calling this a "natural" disaster excuses too easily the role of humankind in contributing to the tragedy. There are several places where the actions or inactions of human beings had a role:

Global climate change. Weather scientists asked about the flooding rains of October opined that the rains were an example of the more extreme and variable weather events produced by global climate change. The charts I have posted in this blog showing rain totals of other weather events in El Salvador certainly seem to show that the past decade has been significantly worse than the preceding 40 years. The carbon emissions of an industrialized world have created an imbalance producing life-threatening weather events in ever-increasing frequency.

Structural poverty. In the pictures from the flooding in El Salvador and the rest of Central America, you do not see any photos of the homes of the middle and upper classes ? you see champas of scrap wood and corrugated tin. You do not see manicured lawns under water ? you see the tiny milpas of the campesino farmer. You do not see a submerged Lexus ? you see the water flowing over an ox cart. You do not see the bank manager sitting in a school which has been converted into a shelter ? you see the single mother with two children who sells trinkets on the side of the street.

These flood disasters which hit El Salvador on a regular basis disproportionately affect the poor because they can only afford to build their dwellings in places where they are at risk. So they end up living in the flood plains, along the gullies which can flash flood, and in communities where a mudslide can block access along the one unimproved road.

Salvadoran Catholic bishop Gregorio Rosa Chavez has proclaimed that the disaster caused by the rains demonstrated "the economic vulnerability, that is to say the poverty so many of our countrymen live immersed within, the social vulnerability, characterized by the structural injustice and the ecological vulnerability, for which the great fault lies in the wild ambition that rages against God's creation, this house of all of us which is deteriorating more each day."

The role of hydroelectric projects. Some are certainly blaming the flooding of the Lower Lempa River on the dams built on the river and the periods of enormous water discharge through the September 15 dam. It's hard to know what would have happened if there were no dams on the river. Generating clean electric power is also important for the country as is the flood control on the river.

The failure to complete risk-mitigation projects. The areas where there were floods and landslides in El Salvador are all places known to be at risk, because they have flooded or collapsed before. In part, the fact that the risks are well understood contributed to a relatively low loss of life in these floods ? communities could be evacuated because the coming dangers were foreseeable. But since these risks were foreseeable, why was so little done to eliminate the risks in the first place? I remember standing near the community of Puerto Parada in the summer of 2010 where flood waters from the Rio Grande de San Miguel had just about dried up. Someone pointed to where the levee along the river had burst to allow in the flood waters. In the past two weeks, I have seen the video of the water again flowing through Puerto Parada as the levee burst again. This same story is repeated in many areas in El Salvador. The government has not done enough to mitigate the foreseeable risks.

***

Feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, replanting fields, and treating water borne illnesses will all be an important part of flood relief in the coming days, weeks, and months. But until the underlying structural problems are addressed and the risks are mitigated, I fear this tragedy will repeat itself. And with global climate change, the repeat event may come much sooner than El Salvador can ever afford.
