Health Care Insurance Fell Off The Rails | RedState

With the current review of the Affordable Healthcare Act (which is anything but affordable), most of the political posturing about health insurance reform has now gone back to the old political methods of presenting heart-wrenching cases as justification for sweeping reform. It is much akin to how the media produces a sad case to promote their agenda. During the middle of the Bush administration, when the financial outlook was really good, liberal news outlets would find some obscure person somewhere and do a story on how terrible her situation was as a way of blaming the administration. It is common procedure. But alas, you will never see a story now about how bad the economy is but how well a particular person is doing somewhere.

There are ways to improve health care access and reduce costs that are fairly simple and a lot less costly than what is being proposed. I have previously written and posted about removing state monopolies and other strategies. However, let?s think about health insurance generically and what it is supposed to do.

Back in the day, someone thought it would be a good idea to go to someone with money and sell ?If you pay me some money up front and regularly, I will pay for your expenses if you have a catastrophe of some sort.? The concept would work for fire damage, severe weather damage, your herd dying of disease, your crops not coming in, and other property losses. With the invention of the automobile, the large investment required to buy one, and the potential for major expenses if you ran yours into someone or something, it seemed a good idea to have insurance against those expenses. The government thought it was such a good idea that laws were passed requiring drivers to have insurance. Of course, mortgage holders also required insurance for properties with liens upon them in order to protect their loan pay back. Legislatures are always willing to require insurance as: a) legislatures are made up of lawyers; b) lawyers always pass laws that help lawyers; and c) insurance companies are quite willing to pay legislatures to support passing those laws.

As insurance companies grew, they thought of more and more things to insure against. Of course, health care expenses was one of them. Somehow, however, the basic concept changed over the years for health insurance (primarily thanks to Franklin Roosevelt and his wage freezes). Using the original concept, you would have insurance for catastrophic expenses. If you were injured severely or had a very serious illness, insurance would cover your expenses (or most of them depending on how much you paid up front). Somehow, the health insurance morphed into policies that paid for everything. Routine office visits, visits to the emergency room (even if it wasn?t an emergency), home health visits, cosmetic procedures, and hundreds of other expenses became covered. Of course, there is no incentive to restrain your visits when it doesn?t cost you anything. In fact, there is a tendency to want to ?get your money?s worth? out of a policy for which you pay premiums. It is also inevitable that a policy like that cannot ever be financially viable for the insurance provider because the costs have no constraint. As costs rose, it became cheaper to buy policies as a group in order to average risk across a group of people. Since people generally can?t get together and form a group to buy insurance, would form these groups? Company employees. Thus began the employer-provided insurance plans. These were great things for unions to try to negotiate when they could not bargain for increased wages.

With an employer-provided plan, there is exactly zero incentive to restrain costs for the employee. The employee only fills out forms and the employer pays all the costs. The employer goes down the tubes. Another financial innovator went to the large employers with this idea, ?If you give me a certain amount of money each year per person, I will take care of their health care needs and you will have fixed costs. If it costs more, I will take the loss, if it costs less, I will keep the extra money?. Thus, the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) was invented. Of course, the way HMOs make money is by doing as little for patients as possible. It is built into the contract. The paradox is that the companies compete by purporting to offer more services but the way they make money is by not providing them.

The real question is how health insurance veered off the normal insurance track. If health insurance was still using the same model as other types of policies, people would primarily have catastrophic insurance and would set their co-pays and deductibles by their level of risk and how much they were willing to pay in premiums. To reduce costs, there has to be incentive for people to do it. The only real incentive is to have people pay for what they use which isn?t catastrophic. For example, if you pay for an office visit, you will decide whether you really need to go before you do. If it costs six to ten times more to go to the emergency room than it does to go to your regular doctor, you will likely go to your regular doctor rather than fill the emergency room with non-emergency patients.

I am not saying people who are destitute should not have access to care. The government should help the poor and people who are legitimately unable to work. People don?t have a problem with helping people who are incapable of working. People do have a problem with paying for people who choose not to work or providing free care to affluent people who don?t need the assistance. To reduce health care costs, the exact wrong thing to do is to make it ?free?. The real answer to the problem is to go back to basics and review what health care insurance is supposed to do and the best and most efficient way to provide that care. Trying to cover everyone with ?free? care and reducing physician payments until there are few doctors left is clearly not the answer.

Seriously Ramp-Up Your Results Using Article Marketing

In recent years, article marketing has really taken off due to the very low cost involved and that it?s proven to drive targeted traffic. Perhaps the fastest method to create traffic is with PPC advertising, but that approach requires both knowledge and a budget. There is more ?work? involved with article marketing; however, it is not hard work and it can be rewarding. For those that do not want to be bothered, then outsourcing is a choice for article creation. The balance of this article talks about some excellent article marketing best practices suggestions that everyone should use. high performance academy

First and foremost, put all your focus on providing information to your readers through your articles, and educate them about the topic you?re talking about. Your articles can have many purposes, but if they are not for backlinking purposes, then among other things they need to pre-sell for you. Articles that are used for marketing purposes are supposed to inform and teach. When you are just talking and giving out valuable information, then the reader?s defenses will be let down to some degree. One particular format that has been hugely successful is to review a product or service within the article. Be careful to avoid only speaking in positive terms about the product because the review will seem biased in favor of the product. So writing high quality articles is all about giving away information your readers can use. Affiliate Revolution Before you even start writing your articles, remember that your target audience is online, which means your articles can?t be too long. It is well-known that online readers are impatient and want immediate information, but length will still be influenced by your target market. You can write articles for publication in directories that are long, but they need to be good because the longer articles may be syndicated on other sites. You want people to click through to your site, so give them something good but not the whole story. Wouldn?t you want your readers to visit your website for more? So let the stew in your mind a little, and then take it with you next time you write an article. Website Automation Wizard Bonus

One thing that some marketers do with positive results is to turn articles into a PDF, and then they can just give it away or post it in directories for free. This could be a collection of all your best articles or the ones that are focused on a similar topic. Of course one never knows about these things, but if your market is right that ebook can get spread around pretty well. You can even promote your own product or affiliate products in this eBook so that when it gets passed around, it?ll bring you traffic and as well as an income. Then, you can also offer this to affiliates and allow them to rebrand with their own links. If you are new to article marketing, then you will find the more experience you get the more creative you can be. It is possible to get noticed and be different in many ways, and that is what you should always try to do. The most important thing is to do high quality article marketing, and that will carry you far indeed.

Roddick upsets Federer at Key Biscayne

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? Techno music rocked the stadium during a changeover, then faded, the din replaced by the crowd's cheers as Andy Roddick took his position at the baseline, one game from a win over nemesis Roger Federer.

Roddick held the balls, and that was the edge he needed. He served out the match to win 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4 Monday night in the third round at the Sony Ericsson Open.

With that, the fans roared again, saluting only the third victory for Roddick in 24 meetings with Federer.

"There is no script in sports, you know. I think that's what makes it the best entertainment in the world," Roddick said. "Nights like tonight are why you play the matches. You don't know what's going to happen."

On paper, it looked like a mismatch between former No. 1s, each a two-time champion in the event. The third-ranked Federer began the night 40-2 since the U.S. Open, while Roddick's ranking had slipped to 34th, his lowest point since 2001.

But Roddick's serve kept him in the match, and then won it. He broke only once but held every service game in the first and last sets.

After falling behind 15-30 in the final game, he closed out the victory with an ace and two service winners, all at more than 130 mph. That ended Federer's streak of 77 consecutive wins against players outside the top 20.

"I feel like I lost against a former No. 1, not that I lost against a guy ranked 30 in the world," Federer said. "I'm happy to see Andy play really well. He's a great champion, and enjoy him while you have him. It was a great night for him and America's tennis."

Also dominating with the serve were Serena and Venus Williams, who both reached the quarterfinals.

Serena matched a career high with 20 aces to beat Samantha Stosur 7-5, 6-3.

"My serve was hot," Williams said. "I was like, 'That's pretty cool.'"

She avenged a loss to Stosur when they last met in the U.S. Open final in September.

"That wasn't in my mind," Williams said. "I just thought, 'This is a new game.'"

Older sister Venus won her third consecutive three-set match, hitting 13 aces as she outlasted No. 15-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2. Williams is playing in her first tournament since withdrawing from the U.S. Open last August after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

"I come out on court knowing I can play well, but almost with no expectations," Williams said.

Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka lost 10 of the first 11 games, then rallied to remain unbeaten this year by beating No. 16-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 1-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5. Azarenka was two points from defeat five times, but swept the last three games and extended her winning streak to 26 matches, all in 2012.

"I'm proud of the way I fought," she said. "With my game I don't think I'm really pleased, but it doesn't really matter. The most important is that I found the resources."

Also reaching the quarterfinals was No. 2 Maria Sharapova, who overcame 11 double-faults to beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 7-6 (3). Sharapova won despite committing 52 unforced errors and losing her serve four times.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round by beating No. 27-seeded Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic is bidding for his third Key Biscayne title and second in a row.

No. 8-seeded Mardy Fish assured he'll remain the top-ranked American man by beating No. 28 Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-3.

Federer lost only seven points on his serve in the opening set, but when he failed to put away an overhead trailing 4-3 in the tiebreaker, the match swung Roddick's way.

Federer squandered another chance with a 1-0 lead in the third set, failing to convert four break points in the next game. After Roddick escaped for 1-all, he earned his lone break in the next game, his grunts filling the stadium as he cracked four forehand winners.

"One of the best return games I ever played," Roddick said.

"It was a big turn of events there in five minutes," Federer said. "That's how tennis goes sometimes."

Roddick served out the final four games without facing a break point. When he let loose a 134-mph serve to win the final point, he raised his arms and waved his racket at the heavens.

He was thinking of his agent, Miamian Ken Meyerson, who died in October.

"I felt like I was a crazy person because I think I was having full dialogues with him the last 30 minutes of the match," Roddick said. "I was just letting him know that I heard him."

Roddick had reason to look for assistance from above: He had lost 52 of 64 sets against Federer entering the match. Federer had won six meetings in a row since Roddick beat him in the Key Biscayne quarterfinals in 2008.

Pupfish, Downfish: Subterranean Tsunami Gives Vertical Shakes to the Water-Hole Home of Endangered Fishes

News | More Science

Watch never-captured footage of a seismic wave rocking the whole pool at Nevada's famed Devils Hole

basic-science, physics, biology, energy-sustainability, environment, evolutionU.S. National Park Service biologist Jeffrey Goldstein measures the water level in Devils Hole. Seismic waves from an earthquake 2,000 miles distant caused a tsunami to roll through the underground pool at Devils Hole in Nevada. Violent oscillations decimated the small breeding area of the endangered species of pupfish that live nowhere else on earth but in these hot waters. Image: Peter Byrne

On March 20 a National Park Service biologist named Jeffrey Goldstein and I descended a rocky incline into the mouth of Devils Hole, a collapsed cave in the Nevada desert 40 miles south of the visitor?s center in Death Valley. Thirty feet down, an arm of water extends out from a deep pool to cover a rock shelf the size of a Ping-Pong table with up to two and a half feet of hot water. This shallow recess is home to 100 much-studied adult Devils Hole pupfish, or Cyprinodon diabolis. Living nowhere else on the planet, the pupfish receive protection from human harm by force of federal law and padlocked gates.

Shortly after 11 A.M., Goldstein was imparting the 10,000-year history of Devils Hole and its piscine denizens to me when the water level began rising and sinking by quarter-inches, then inches, then feet. As we scrambled up the rocky incline, the pool was sucked out of the hole almost entirely with a giant gurgle. It rushed back in, dislodging a metal walkway over the shelf and climbing up the sides of the hole toward us. After a few more gargles and belches, the pool waters returned to a normal level. The rock shelf had been swept clean of vegetation and pupfish eggs.

Video: Seismic waves from an earthquake 2,000 miles distant caused a tsunami to roll through the underground pool at Devils Hole in Nevada. Violent oscillations decimated the small breeding area of the endangered species of pupfish that live nowhere else on earth but in these hot waters.

We later learned that the underground tsunami had resulted from seismic waves emanating from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, 12 miles deep, near the Mexican state of Oaxaca, 2,000 miles distant. According to Kevin Wilson, the National Park Service's aquatic ecologist at Devils Hole, the tidal effects of earthquakes have been directly observed on only three occasions since a 1976 Supreme Court ruling preserved the Devils Hole pupfish by restricting agricultural pumping of the Amargosa Valley aquifer. "More people have walked on the moon than have witnessed the effects of an earthquake at Devils Hole," Wilson says.

[In April 2010, U.S. Geological Survey researcher Ambre Chaudoin captured a Devils Hole tsunami with cameras tightly focused on the bottom of the pool. This was the first video of such an event: Video Shows Baja Earthquake Created a Devilish "Mini-Tsunami" for Endangered Devils Hole Pupfish]

Goldstein and I captured the rare event with pocket-size video cameras, so you can share in our adventure. Even without the excitement of an underground tsunami as a backdrop, the history of Devils Hole and its pupfish residents is worth a revisit.

Isolated in the pool by retreating ice 10,000 years ago, the Devils Hole pupfish have long feasted on algae, small invertebrates and, occasionally, baby pupfish. The fish breed and lay their eggs in the shallow, 92 degree Fahrenheit water that submerges the rock shelf. The deep pool has been explored by human divers to a depth of 435 feet. The inch-long fish are known to dive down 24 meters, but they prefer to hang out on the shelf because it is covered with edible vegetation and receives occasional sunlight. Cables snake along the stone walls just above and connect to the instruments that monitor temperature and other environmental indicators. Divers count the fish twice a year. The population has ranged from 500 in the 1980s to a near catastrophic low of 38 in 2006 to 119 adults, at last count.

And what about the aftermath of our earthmoving adventure?

The walkways and instruments were repaired within hours. This type of periodic disturbance, Wilson says, is not a disaster for the fish; it resets the ecology of the pool, improving it over the long haul. Immediately after their food and eggs were swept away by the tides, the fish responded with a frenzy of mating. Environmental disaster, it seems, acted as an aphrodisiac

Types Of Unsecured Loans To Consider Overview ? Cute Girl Hair ...

There is a variety of unsecured loans, and a common type is a loan from a friend or a family member. It is important to take such loans seriously, whether you are the lender or borrower. If you are unable to pay back the amount borrowed, this can put a strain on your relationship. Another type of unsecured loan is charging purchases to a credit card. Persons who use a credit card to make payments sign a form that authorizes them. The latter stands for an agreement to pay back the amount borrowed. The terms and conditions and the size of the loan are agreed before signing the cardholder agreement.. Cardholders are not required to pledge some asset as collateral, such as a car or real estate. If the loan is not paid on time, the credit card company may assess additional fees, start legal proceedings, or send the account to collections.

If the borrower experiences significant reduction of income and is unable to repay the loan, he may claim bankruptcy in order to stop collection. Most of the time, credit card companies cannot demand that persons who have been made bankrupt sell any assets they own. Claiming bankruptcy, however, is a very serious step and can damage the borrower?s credit rating. Moreover, financial establishments consider such borrowers high risk and are less likely to approve their loan applications.

Commercial paper is another unsecured loan to consider. It is a short-term, unsecured debt instrument used to finance inventories and accounts receivable and to meet short-term liabilities. Commercial paper is typically issued by corporations and large banks to meet their short-term obligations. Given that collateral is not required, only businesses with excellent and very good credit get a good price when selling commercial paper. Compared to other instruments such as bonds, it usually goes with a higher interest rate. Interest rates fluctuate and are lower if the term is shorter.

Banks also offer unsecured loan to borrowers. To determine the type and size of the loan, financial institutions assess the creditworthiness of applicants. Persons with poor credit usually have less luck in getting an unsecured personal loan. Even if their loan application is approved, they are likely to get a higher interest rate. This is because the financial institution takes more risk.

Unsecured loans are usually small in size, regardless of the type. The money can be used to pay bills, go on vacation, buy textbooks, etc. Borrowers can use the money for home repairs or renovation (e.g. remodeling the kitchen), to consolidate high-interest debt, start a small business, etc. There are no tax benefits meaning that interest on this type of loan is not tax deductible. Another disadvantage is that the interest rate on an unsecured loan can easily be 10 percent or more. Borrowers pay more in interest charges than on home equity loans.

This web site has tons of useful information.

Follow This Nutrition Advice For Nice Health : hunting fitness|in ...

Learning about nutrition will help you start a healthier life. You will be able to make better choices, if you know more about food groups and how different foods impact your body. This article will introduce you to some basic tips to get started. Click here to find out more about apidexin side effects now.

Cook mushrooms well prior to eating. Cooking them well will get rid of the carcinogens they contain. Without good health, you cannot burn calories or lose weight efficiently.

Take care to get the required amount of selenium when you are on your diet. Selenium is a trace mineral that works as a potent antioxidant to increase your skin?s elasticity and fight off the signs of aging. It can neutralize free radicals along with helping to protect your skin from the sun. Selenium can be found in higher concentrations in foods such as wheat germ, eggs, brown rice, tuna, Brazil nuts and garlic.

Nutrition students learn how to minimize milled grains in the food that they eat. However, getting rid of these grains means that you depriving yourself of fiber and essential nutrients. Does it seem right to strip these nutrients and then purchase wheat germ and fiber additives to enhance your diet? No, it just does not make sense.

Vegetables make a great calorie-light addition to any diet, whether they come fresh from the market, out of a can, or from the freezer. They provide essential vitamins and minerals for your body, and leave you feeling full. You should eat several portions of vegetables every day, such as through a salad or vegetable-rich soup.

Inexpensive products are available that can allow you to focus on fitness while staying at home. Getting an exercise tool can be the push you need to get yourself in shape.

Don?t try to change your diet in one fell swoop. If you try to change everything at one time you are more likely to find the task daunting and resume older unhealthy eating habits. By beginning with baby steps, you have the chance to get used to the new diet slowly. Instead of soda drink caffeinated tea and instead of chips try fruit. By making changes gradually, you allow yourself to become accustomed to the modifications you make; then you can incorporate additional changes. After a while, you?ll be on a whole new diet!

Many certified nutritionists advocate replacing beef, chicken and pork with a diet that it is rich in fish. Fish is rich in omega3 fatty acids which are important for heart health. A wide of variety of fish ranging across many textures and tastes are available to choose from.

When you cook eggs for breakfast take out the yolks. Egg whites have far less cholesterol and are much healthier for you than the yolk. A good measure of substitution is to use the whites of two eggs, rather than the usual whole one.

Dairy is a nutritious addition to your diet, but you have to moderate how much dairy you eat. g. use fat-free yogurt in place of sour cream, or substitute skim milk for whole milk. Dairy products contribute to strong bones and joints. Low-fat dairy will give you these benefits without greatly increasing the fat in your diet.

A great nutrition idea is to avoid grains for a short period of time. Throughout history, humans have eaten fruits, veggies, meats, beans, and nuts. Grains were produced only a short time ago. If you eliminate grains from your diet, you may feel more lively and energetic.

Try and eat the rainbow! Fruits and vegetables that are very brightly colored give you lots of nutrition without tons of calories. Try to use a good mix of different colored fruits and vegetables in every meal. Make sure you also eat skins, they are also good for you.

You can ruin the start of your day by forgoing breakfast. Many people mistakenly think that skipping a meal will aid in weight loss. Passing on breakfast will in fact leave you feeling hungry, which means you?re much more likely to snack throughout the day. You are going to wind up eating more calories in a given day because you?re eating unhealthy snack foods as opposed to a healthy breakfast in the morning.

Minimize your salt consumption. High sodium diets can cause high blood pressure and high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart disease or kidney failure. Too much sodium can also hurt your bones. The more sodium you take in, the more calcium you excrete.

Highly milled grains should be minimized in any diet. If you get rid of the hull or the husk from grains, you are getting rid of the main thing that gives you fiber and nutrients. It really doesn?t make a lot of sense to eat processed grains, and then add fiber or wheat germ to your diet. No, it?s much more productive for people to get necessary nutrients from the food they eat.

Nutrition should be a top priority for pregnant or lactating women. Pregnant women need a healthy amount of protein, but they do not always feel like eating while pregnant. A fantastic option for getting your protein intake is through egg whites. With a protein content of 3 grams, a calorie count of 15, and a fat content of zero, egg whites are an ideal source of protein for expectant mothers. Always eat eggs that have been pasteurized to minimize the risk of any health problems.

{By using a juicer, you can really boost your daily intake of veggies, fruits, minerals and vitamins. You can get a bit of bite to fruit juices by adding vegetables. Ginger is another great addition to juices, it adds a zip to juice made from carrots and apples. If you really want to awaken your taste buds, throw in half a jalapeno!

}{Everyone can benefit from keeping their nutrition balanced. A third of your diet should be proteins. Half of your diet should be carbs and your remaining diet should be fat. Balance your carbohydrate intake, making sure that simple sugars are not the majority of what you take in.

}There are plans already in place that you can adapt to start living a healthier lifestyle and ensure you are getting a well-balanced diet with proper nutritional value. Get out there and enjoy a variety of healthy foods to decide which type of plan could work for you. You can learn from these tips so that you can choose a route that will get you started on a nutritional plan for better health. You can win your ex back today by knowing more about fix a relationship now.

When Hall of Fame tailback Tony Dorsett was getting slammed to the turf in the 1970s, or Super Bowl-winning QB Joe Theismann's leg was being gruesomely broken by Lawrence Taylor in the 1980s, it was just football.

Now things are different.

Scientific studies show head trauma can leave long-term damage. Hundreds of former players are suing the NFL in federal court, saying they weren't protected properly from injury. Congress is paying close attention.

Part of the reason the New Orleans Saints were punished so severely for their bounty system could be, as Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated when explaining his decision, that nothing is as critical for the league right now as the safety of players and real concern about concussions.

In the current climate, those issues seem to permeate every decision made at NFL headquarters.

"They're not unrelated. You can certainly see the rules of the National Football League have changed over the years. What used to be considered normal player conduct that could result in serious injury has been expressly prohibited by the rules," Sen. Dick Durbin said in a telephone interview Thursday.

"Teams are dramatically more sensitive now to concussions and how soon a player is ready to play again. It shows awareness of the fact that what happens on a football field is more than a game. Some of these injuries can have an impact on a person's life. It also is an indication that those of us, as fans, should hold these leagues to a higher standard."

Durbin, an Illinois Democrat and the assistant Senate majority leader, is organizing a Judiciary Committee hearing to examine whether bounties in major sports should be considered a crime. He plans to invite witnesses from the NFL, along with officials from the NBA, NHL, NCAA and Major League Baseball.

At an October 2009 House hearing on brain trauma in the NFL, Goodell was taken to task by lawmakers for not doing enough about concussions amid a growing body of medical literature linking head injuries in football with brain disease. That set in motion a series of changes to the league's policies on head injuries ? and they keep on coming.

On Wednesday, a few hours after the NFL announced its unprecedented penalties against the Saints, the chairman of the competition committee, Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, talked about proposals that will be considered next week at the owners' meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. Among them:

? Allowing each team to designate one player per week who can go on the inactive list because of a concussion and be replaced on the roster.

? Expanding the rule that prohibits horse-collar tackles to also have it cover quarterbacks who are in the pocket.

? Expanding the protection of defenders from crackback blocks by also deeming them defenseless players who cannot be hit in the head or get hit by someone leading with a helmet.

"The protection of the players is the big thing," New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "You don't have a league without the players."

Goodell's stern punishment of those involved in the Saints' bounty system sent a message to everyone in the NFL: Do not encourage deliberately injuring players. Goodell also was harsh because of attempts to cover up the bounties.

He suspended Saints head coach Sean Payton for all of next season, and indefinitely banned their former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who was recently hired by the St. Louis Rams. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis was barred for half of 2012, an assistant coach got a six-game ban, and the team also was docked two second-round draft picks and $500,000.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark thought the penalty for Payton was "extreme."

"They made a point because the coaches were involved," Clark said. "They were going to get somebody."

When the NFL first made its investigation of the Saints public on March 2, droves of former players talked about how off-the-books incentives have been offered in NFL locker rooms for years and years ? not on the scale of what happened in New Orleans, but illegal nonetheless.

Theismann, for example, insisted bounties were put on him.

"In a sick way, I guess it's flattering," he said recently. "If you had a bounty on you, you were a pretty good player and they wanted to get rid of you."

One of the ex-players suing the NFL, former Saints receiver Joe Horn, has no doubt there's a connection between the concussion-related court cases and Goodell's actions.

"All of a sudden, he wants to pop his chest out and set up these (punishments)? If he was a great commissioner and he really cared about player safety, he would have fined teams five years ago for what happened, because it happened back then," Horn said. "(Goodell) should fine himself $7 million, because as the commissioner, he should have known years ago this same thing was happening with every other team in the NFL."

Goodell still needs to decide what to do about the two dozen or so players involved in the scheme in New Orleans from 2009-11, when Williams handed out envelopes stuffed with cash to reward particularly vicious hits on specific opponents. Targeted players included quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Brett Favre and Kurt Warner; "knockouts" were worth $1,500 and "cart-offs" $1,000; payments doubled or tripled during the playoffs.

According to the league, Saints defensive captain Jonathan Vilma offered $10,000 to any player who knocked then-Vikings QB Favre out of the 2010 NFC championship game.

The NFL Players Association said Thursday it wants to meet with Goodell to discuss the bounty investigation before players are punished.

"To date, neither the league, nor the Saints, have helped us facilitate interviews with members of management or the coaching staff," the union's statement read. "We expect the league to provide all information so that we can ensure a fair process for all who were involved."

Hiking the Homestead ? Making A Home And Family

Our new favorite family activity is to the load up the kids in backpacks and go hiking on the homestead.? My husband knows a lot of our property because he has walked it quite a few times already, and he hunted in the back part of the property that I don?t see often.

We have a little Maple bush, a Cedar grove which is a great place for shade from the hot sun, a few hills which Val has named Pinku and Peegu, and some swampy areas too.

Two of our dogs followed us along on our hike.

Val even decided at one point of the hike that it was far too hot for her dress.

I am so thankful for the warm days we have been having so the whole family can enjoy time outside together exercising, talking, and thinking in the moments of quiet in the woods.

'Nanoslinky': A novel nanofluidic technology for DNA manipulation and measurement

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? Remember Slinky?, the coiled metal spring that "walks" down stairs with just a push, momentum and gravity? Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed their own version of this classic -- albeit 10 million times smaller -- as a novel technology for manipulating and measuring DNA molecules and other nanoscale (billionth of a meter) materials.

In the first of two recent papers, Samuel Stavis, Elizabeth Strychalski and colleagues demonstrated that a nanoscale fluidic channel shaped like a staircase with many steps (developed previously at NIST and Cornell University) can be used to control the otherwise random drift of a DNA molecule through a fluid. Squeezed into the shallowest step at the top of the staircase, a strand of DNA diffuses randomly across that step. The DNA molecule seeks to increase its entropy -- the universal tendency towards disorder in a system -- by relieving its confinement, and therefore, "walks" down onto the next deeper step when it reaches the edge. The motion of the molecule down the staircase, which the researchers termed "entropophoresis" (entropy-driven transport), ends when it becomes trapped on the deepest step at the bottom. Because this motion resembles that of a Slinky?, the researchers nicknamed their system the "nanoslinky." The researchers found that DNA molecules of different sizes and shapes descended the staircase at different rates -- which suggests the structure could be used to separate, concentrate and organize mixtures of nanoscale objects.

Stavis says that this novel technology provides advantages over traditional nanofluidic methods for manipulating and measuring DNA. "Control over the behavior of a DNA molecule is built into the staircase structure. After placing the molecule on the top step [by driving the DNA strand up the staircase with an electric field], no external forces are needed to make it move," Stavis says. "The staircase is a passive nanofluidic technology that automates complex manipulations and measurements of DNA."

This NIST advance in nanofluidic technology dovetails nicely with a NIST innovation in measurement science -- specifically, determining the size of a DNA molecule in nanofluidic "slitlike confinement" imposed by the narrow gap between the floor of each step and the ceiling of the channel. In the "nanoslinky" system, Strychalski explains, the coiled and folded DNA strand contracts progressively as it moves down the steps. "Because there are many steps, we can make more detailed measurements than previous studies," she says.

Getting the most from those measurements was the goal of the research reported in the NIST team's second paper.? "The challenge was to make our measurements of DNA size more quantitative," Strychalski says.

Previous measurements of DNA dimensions in nanofluidic systems, Strychalski says, have been limited by imaging errors from the optical microscopes used to measure the dimensions of DNA molecules labeled with a fluorescent dye. "The first problem is the diffraction limit, or the optical resolution, of the fluorescence microscope," she says. "The second problem is the pixel resolution of the camera. Because a DNA molecule is not much larger than the wavelength of light and the effective pixel size, images of fluorescent DNA molecules are blurred and pixilated, and this increases the apparent size of the molecule."

To improve their measurements of DNA molecules during their descent, the NIST researchers used models to approximate the effects of diffraction and pixilation. Applying these "numerical simulations" to the images of DNA molecules confined by the staircase made the final measurements of DNA size the most quantitative to date. These measurements also showed that more work is needed to fully understand this complicated system.

According to Stavis and Strychalski, the staircase is a simple prototype of a new class of engineered nanofluidic structures with complex three-dimensional surfaces. With further refinements, the technology may someday be mass produced for measuring and manipulating not just DNA molecules, but other types of biopolymers and nanoscale materials for health care and nanomanufacturing.

(AP) ? A rabbi and three children gunned down at a Jewish school in France were buried Wednesday in a Jerusalem cemetery, with a bereaved mother and wife begging her slain loved ones to "come back home."

The four were killed Monday in the French city of Toulouse when a man on a motorcycle opened fire with two handguns outside the school. Hundreds of French police descended on the suspect's hideout in Toulouse on Wednesday, but by midday still hadn't drawn him out after hours of gunbattles and negotiations.

The bodies of Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, his sons Arieh, 5, and Gabriel, 3, and 8-year-old Myriam Monsenego were flown to Israel early Wednesday. The families had asked for burial in Israel; the children held dual Israeli-French citizenship and the rabbi had lived in Israel for years.

At the funeral ceremony, Myriam's eldest brother, Avishai, in his 20s, wailed and called to God to give his parents the strength "to endure the worst trial that can be endured."

In the name of the four remaining Monsenego children, he urged his father and mother to "keep going, keep going, keep going."

Hundreds of mourners, many of them sobbing, thronged around the bodies laid out on stretchers as eulogies were delivered. The slain members of the Sandler family had been wrapped in white prayer shawls while Myriam had been draped in black velvet.

Mourners then walked to the burial grounds. Men carried the bodies on stretchers and buried them, while women watched from behind a nearby fence.

Later, Eva Sandler, the widow of the slain rabbi, walked to the freshly covered graves of her sons and husband and laid her hands on them. "Come back home," she cried out in French.

Israeli media reported that Eva Sandler is pregnant and had arrived in Israel with her remaining child, a toddler.

Among the mourners were grieving relatives who arrived from France, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe and leaders of the French Jewish community.

In his eulogy, Israeli parliament speaker Reuven Rivlin said the Jewish people "once again find themselves facing beasts ... driven out their minds by hatred."

Juppe said "an attack on a Jew in France is not only an issue for French Jews. ... anti-Semitism is against all French values."

The school attack was the bloodiest France has ever known and the bloodiest assault on Jewish targets there in decades.

Meanwhile, hundreds of French police on Wednesday surrounded the Toulouse hideout of a man suspected in the school shooting and two earlier attacks that killed three French paratroops. A gunbattle erupted and police were trying to negotiate the man's surrender.

French Interior Minister Claude Gueant described the suspect as a 24-year-old French national who claims connections to al-Qaida and "wants to take revenge for Palestinian children" killed in the Middle East.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad denounced the deadly shooting attack and condemned the link to Palestinian children.

"It's time for criminals to stop using the Palestinian cause to justify their terrorist actions," Fayyad said in a statement. "The children of Palestine want nothing but dignified lives for themselves and for all the children in the world."

What to call the particle formerly known as Higgs

A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but does it matter what a subatomic particle is called?

Earlier this month, organisers of a physics meeting requested that the Higgs boson ? the still-hypothetical particle thought to endow other particles with mass? ? instead be referred to as either the BEH or scalar boson. The name change might seem esoteric, but it hints at a complex past? ? and trouble ahead over credit for the boson, if it is found.

To understand, rewind about 50 years. As with most scientific advances, a single mind did not solve the mass puzzle. Work by Yoichiro Nambu of the University of Chicago in 1961 led to the idea that a mass-giving field interrupted an early universe until then filled only with massless particles.

In August 1964, Robert Brout and Fran?ois Englert (the B and E in BEH) at the Free University in Brussels, Belgium, ironed out some kinks in the theory and detailed a mechanism. But it was Peter Higgs at the University of Edinburgh, UK, who first explicitly predicted the particle we now call the Higgs? ? in a paper published in October 1964.

This progression explains the BEH boson option, one of the two mooted at the annual Moriond meeting in La Thuile, Italy, but why change it this year? Many say it is because Englert was at Moriond, and the organisers didn't want to upset him. Other attendees, however, were upset by the proposed change, including Wade Fisher of Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Anonymous scalar

Fisher says the debaters fall into four main camps: Higgs supporters; BEH proponents; those favouring the anonymous scalar boson; and those who favour another name ? the BEHHGK boson. The latter group, including Fisher, want to credit Dick Hagen, Gerald Guralnik and Tom Kibble, who published a mass-giving mechanism in 1964.

Some believe that these physicists do not deserve to be considered on an equal footing with Brout, Englert and Higgs because their paper appeared later. Others disagree, because the paper was received by the journal Physical Review Letters before Higgs's paper was actually published. Guralnik has even written a paper recalling how he heard of Brout, Englert and Higgs's papers just as he and his colleagues were about to place their manuscript in the envelope. "Not a single thought or calculation was removed or added," writes Guralnik. The only change they made was to the references, something that he now bitterly regrets.

The omission of these three names from the BEH name chosen at Moriond "was considered a curiosity, a slight, a political statement and a mistake by those to whom I spoke", says Fisher.

Higgs momentum

Others point to the ad-hoc way in which particles seem to be named. "It's not like elements whose names are very carefully chosen by a committee," says physics Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg at the University of Texas at Austin, who named the Z boson that carries the weak force.

This might be a taste of the debate awaiting a Nobel prize committee soon. Many are calling 2012 "the year of the Higgs"? ? but a Nobel prize can be split between no more than three people (Brout is out of the running as he died last year).

In the meantime, will BEH catch on? Fisher doubts it. "There is too much momentum behind the name 'Higgs'," he says. "The Nobel committee may decide otherwise but they are not the sole arbiters of historical accuracy."

Perfect Roast Chicken | Weelicious ? - Fast, Easy & Fresh ...

I?ve cooked and eaten a good amount of roast chicken in my day. I like to think I?ve seen it all ? from birds so bland and boring they weren?t worth eating to cluckers so juicy and succulent I devoured every last bite.

I?ve discovered two things that are key to making an amazing roast chicken: 1) cooking at a very high temperature so that the skin becomes crispy and golden and seals the meat inside so it remains moist and 2) buying the best quality chicken possible.

To perfect this recipe I experimented for an entire week, flipping, seasoning, and cooking at different times and temperatures. I roasted the chickens of several different store brands as well as a few from my favorite farmer?s market vendors. When it came time to taste test, I found that the quality of the bird had everything to do with the amount of ooh?s and ahh?s it received.

As you can probably imagine, I wound up serving my family chicken every night that week, but the recipe turned out so well, everyone was as enthusiastic with dinner on day 4 as they were on day 1 ? and my husband insists that this is the best chicken he?s ever tasted.

So kick your oven temperature way up, buy the best quality bird you can get your hands on and watch your family devour this chicken. Just make sure to set aside 1/2 cup or so to make Chicken Bean and Cheese Quesadillas for school lunch the next day!

Roast Chicken (Serves 4)

1 4-Pound Chicken
2 Tsp Salt
3-4 Sprigs Thyme
1 Small Lemon, cut in half

1. Wash the chicken and pat dry, removing as much excess liquid as possible.
2. Rub the salt all over the chicken ? inside and out.
3. Place chicken in a 9-inch skillet with an oven-proof handle. Refrigerate, uncovered, for 3-24 hours.*
5. Heat oven to 475?F. **
6. Place the skillet, without the chicken, in the oven for 15 minutes or on a stovetop burner for 1 minute to heat.
7. Stuff chicken with thyme and lemon and tie legs together.
8. Place chicken breast-side up in the pan and bake uncovered, for 30 minutes.
9. Flip chicken over and place back in the oven for 20 minutes.
10. Turn the chicken breast-side up again for an additional 10 minutes.
11. Remove from oven and allow chicken to cool for 10 minutes and serve.

* If you don?t have a skillet with an oven-proof handle, use a baking dish just larger than your chicken. Though in step 6, do not heat dish on the stovetop ? only in the oven.

** Use the convection setting on your oven if you have one, reducing the cooking time in step 8 to 25 minutes.

Hazy shades of life on early Earth

ScienceDaily (Mar. 18, 2012) ? A 'see-sawing' atmosphere over 2.5 billion years ago preceded the oxygenation of our planet and the development of complex life on Earth, a new study has shown.

Research, led by experts at Newcastle University, UK, and published March 18 in the journal Nature Geoscience, reveals that Earth's early atmosphere periodically flipped from a hydrocarbon-free state into a hydrocarbon-rich state similar to that of Saturn's moon, Titan.

This switch between "organic haze" and a "haze-free" environment was the result of intense microbial activity and would have had a profound effect on the climate of Earth system.

Similar to the way scientists believe our climate behaves today, the team say their findings provide us with an insight into Earth's surface environment prior to oxygenation of the planet.

Study lead Dr Aubrey Zerkle, based in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University, explains: "Models have previously suggested that Earth's early atmosphere could have been warmed by a layer of organic haze.

"Our geochemical analyses of marine sediments from this time period provide the first evidence for such an atmosphere.

"However, instead of evidence for a continuously 'hazy' period we found the signal flipped on and off, in response to microbial activity.

"This provides us with insight into Earth's surface environment prior to oxygenation of the planet and confirms the importance of methane gas in regulating the early atmosphere."

Dr Zerkle, working along with Dr James Farquhar at the University of Maryland, USA, and Dr Simon Poulton at Newcastle University, UK, analysed the geochemistry of marine sediments deposited between 2.65 and 2.5 billion years ago in what is now South Africa.

They found evidence of local production of oxygen by microbes in the oceans, but carbon and sulphur isotopes indicate that little of that oxygen entered the atmosphere.

Instead, the authors suggest that the atmosphere transitioned repeatedly between two states: one with a thin, hydrocarbon haze and the other haze-free. These geochemical records were supported by models of the ancient atmosphere performed by colleagues at the NASA Astrobiology Institute, led by Dr Mark Claire (currently at the University of East Anglia, UK) and Dr Shawn Domagal-Goldman, which demonstrated how the transitions could be caused by changes in the rate of methane production by microbes.

The conditions which enabled the bi-stable organic haze to form permanently ended when the atmosphere became oxygenated some 100 million years after the sediments were laid down.

"What is most surprising about this study is that our data seems to indicate the atmospheric events were discrete in nature, flip-flopping between one stable state into another," explains co-author Dr Farquhar.

"This type of response is not all that different from the way scientists think climate operates today, and reminds us how delicate the balance between states can be."

Professor Mark Thiemens, Dean of Physical Sciences at the University of California San Diego, adds: "Another important facet of the work is that it provides insight into the formation of atmospheric aerosols, particularly organic ones.

"Besides the obvious importance for the evolution of the atmosphere, the role of aerosol formation is one of the most poorly understood components in the present day climate models. This provides a new look into this process that is quite new and valuable."

100% Home Equity Loans - Should You Max Out Your Home's ...

A 100% home equity loan can free up your cash at a low interest rate. While favorable rates and tax benefits make this option look good, consider your own financial situation first. Asking yourself the following questions will give you a better idea of how much a 100% home equity loan can help you.

How Cheap Is Your Loan?

Is the APR on your prospective home equity loan better than what you can find for a personal loan or a credit card? Chances are that home equity loan rates are better. If you don?t know, take the time to research rates now. Lenders will post their APR online or you can receive an emailed quote in minutes.

When you take out more than 80% of your home?s value, you can?t qualify for the lowest rate. This can still be cheaper than other types of financing though. Another factor in your loan?s cost in the tax advantage, which you don?t receive with credit cards or personal loans.

How Will You Financially Benefit From Your Loan?

Are you planning to pay off high interest debt or go furniture shopping? Tapping into all of your home equity makes sense if you see immediate financial improvement. For purchases that don?t appreciate, save up for the purchase.

Using all of your equity takes away a financial cushion that you can use in an emergency. If you have no other cash reserves, it is best to use another type of credit or only part your equity.

When Do You Plan To Move?

Another factor to consider is when you plan to move. By drawing on all of your home equity now, you won?t receive much from selling your home in a year or two. After a couple of years of paying back your principal and of your home appreciating with the market, you will have enough equity built up to receive something when you sell.

Maxing out your home equity is best for cases where you can see immediate financial gain. Otherwise, keep at least a part of your home?s value for future financial needs. And always check with several lenders to be sure you are getting the best deal, no matter what type of loan you choose.
