iPod Decade: The Life—and Impending Death—of a World-Changing Gadget

On Oct. 23, 2001, Apple introduced its first portable music player, the iPod, to mixed reviews. Ten years and 315 million sales later, the iPod's influence on consumer technology is hard to overstate. But the iPod era is coming to a close. Smartphones with music and video players are replacing the iPod, along with the category it helped create.
