Community Review Description

The Community Review is a regular series of articles on Paragon Gaming that takes quotes from the PGN community (forums, twitter, etc) and uses the quotes to review a new/relatively new video game.

In this edition of Community Review we take a look at iD?s newest game ?RAGE?. ?The game attempts to take step forwards in the first person shooter genre while still harkening back to their old titles like Doom and Quake. ?And in many ways they succeed, but thanks to strange choices with their new engine and some prominent bugs that were still ever-present at launch, the game suffers early.

?Finally in game, finally pass up the intro story animation and prepare to step foot into the wasteland for the first time aaaaaaand black screen.? ? Aetherspark

?While they look fine in general, the fact that everything is blurred out until you turn and look at it- then it pops up clear is really distracting.? ? Echelon

With some driver installations, forced settings changes since there are no real options in the game thanks to ?innovative? decisions to have the engine decide your settings for you, you can play the game without issue. ?While patches since the games launch have been semi-frequent and sometimes even helpful, the game still suffers from major flaws that are built into the engine itself forcing many PC gamers to lean towards the console counterparts.

?Promptly go back and exchange it for the PS3 version, at least it?s playable.??-?Aetherspark

?Stay away from the PC version due to the graphics problems. At least until the game is good and patched up, and has dropped a bit in price.? ? Sanatarian

But, not everything about RAGE is bad. ?Just like Doom 3 and Quake 4, they weren?t perfect but they are by a proven studio so there are plenty of bright spots if you can get the game running smoothly.

?Overall, I?m loving the voice acting and the character animations (the chinese sales guy in Wellspring looks amazing when he talks) and the story is sort of intriguing but very vague. It feels like they are slowly giving you background of the world around you as the story goes on (I?m still in the ? ?What the fuck is teh authority? phase) but if they don?t then its just another Gears of War situation.??-?Echelon

?Other than the aforementioned screen tearing and slow texture loading, the game is Very solid. It has a very doom 3/quake 4 id software feel to it. The controls, both driving and on foot, are good.?-?Sanatarian

?The game itself has wonderful voice acting, and all of the modeling and animation is pretty solid. The environments themselves have enough assets to make them believable and so far only one time have I found a copy and pasted corridor. I was not expecting as much around vehicles as the game presents, but this is certainly not a bad thing. The racing mini-games are fun enough to keep your attention long enough to earn enough ?Racing Certificates? to upgrade your cars and perpetuate the cycle. You get quite a few guns quite quickly and it appears for every gun there are 4 different ammo types that drastically change the weapons firepower (ie regular shotgun shells can be modded to have the shotgun work like a grenade launcher). The enemies seem a little simple one on one but when a group for 4-5 come after you it really feels as if they are working together to surround you. I am looking forward to see how everything shapes up in the end of this game.??-?Aetherspark

So, as you can see the game at its core has the potential to be very enjoyable, but the time that iD put into developing this new engine was both hit and miss and likely they could have gotten a better effect by borrowing the Unreal or Crytek engines considering the game ends up looking a step below par when all is said and done despite the fact that it seems to have the ability to look even better.
