Correct Arch Supports Can Reduce Foot, Leg And Back Pain

Your feet must be aligned properly when walking, or additional stress can cause unnecessary pain. The small strips of metal or plastic are inside shoes and boots. Pronation is the movement or revolving of the foot when we walk or run. Three types are overpronation, neutral and underpronation. As we take a step, our foot strikes first on the lateral, or outer portion of the foot. The weight is then distributed throughout the foot to minimize stress.

The weight is redistributed as we follow through on our gate. Shoe or boot stiffness, as well as the quality of the arch support, both affect the alignment of the foot. If it is correctly distributed, our feet are less tired at the end of the day. It also affects the ankles, knees and back. When our gait is executed correctly, there is no undue stress on those parts of our body, so pain is reduced.

As we walk and run, our feet go through complex movements that redistribute weight and affect stress felt in other parts of our bodies. Overpronation means that after striking the ground with the outer, or lateral, portion of our foot, it rolls in too much. This movement pulls at foot and knee joints and can cause severe strain. Keeping our feet aligned correctly reduces the rolling as well as the associated pain.

Underpronation, or supination, is the opposite. It means that the gait is stiff because the foot does not roll in enough. It too, can cause pain because of incorrect movement. The shock of striking the ground is not dissipated throughout the foot.

Neutral pronation is the most ideal movement of the foot. It means that it is moving the correct amount to provide the most efficient use of the energy as it is distributed through the foot.

Additional stress points for either under or overpronation include the ankles, legs, knees and back. A multitude of issues involving pain can be avoided if the feet are kept aligned. Correct support is very important for general health.

Some doctors recommend orthotics for severe cases, but for most people, off the shelf products can provide the proper correction. Many products have been developed to make sure the arches get the proper support and keep the feet aligned. A long day of work is not nearly as draining when our feet are not in pain.
