Google links Android to App Engine cloud

Forging links between cloud and mobile computing, Google plans to introduce this week a set of Eclipse-based Java development tools for building Android applications backed by the company's App Engine cloud platform, a company representative confirmed on Monday morning.

With App Engine Tooling for Android, Google will enable developers to build Android applications using common tools and techniques spanning client and server parts of applications to make it simple to deploy the server side to App Engine, the company said on the website for its Google I/O conference being held in San Francisco this week. The session on App Engine Tooling for Android is scheduled for Tuesday.

Google I/O, which is Google's annual developer conference, will feature more than 5,000 participants from 60 countries, Google said in a blog post on Monday. "This year's keynote presentations will highlight the biggest opportunities for developers and feature two of our most popular and important developer platforms: Android and Chrome," said Vic Gundotra, Google senior vice president of engineering. "Google engineers from Andy Rubin and Sundar Pichai's teams will unveil new features, preview upcoming updates, and provide new insights into the growing momentum behind these platforms."

Among topics of interest at the conference include 3D graphics on Android, Android Market, connecting C/C++ code to JavaScript in Web applications, building interactive Web applications using HTML5, and what is next for HTML5. The Android Honeycomb release also will be highlighted.
