Find My Mac Is Live Within Apple iCloud (PC Magazine)

If you ever were to lose track of your Mac, Apple will soon be able to help you find it. Find My Mac, a new feature that's just like Find My iPhone for computers, has launched in beta for developers in iCloud, MacRumors says.

The iCloud developer portal went live in beta on Monday. Find My Mac is available within iCloud where it can be turned on in the control panel's system preferences, allowing you to see where your Mac is on iCloud.com.

Lacking the GPS functionality of iOS devices, with Find My Mac, Apple relies on Wi-Fi to locate a machine. Once you locate your lost Mac, you can remotely lock it, wipe it, send a message or play a sound, features that are already included in Find My iPhone. 9to5Mac claims the service is "fairly accurate."

But if your computer has been lost or stolen, there are other solutions besides Find My Mac. For suggestions, check out the slideshow below.

Find My Mac will launch with iCloud this fall.

Pricing details about iCloud were also revealed earlier this week . iCloud users will get 5GB of storage free with the option to upgrade. According to 9to5Mac, another 10GB will be $20 a year, 20GB more will run you $40 a year, and 50GB will cost $100.

Apple debuted iCloud in June at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. As the name suggests, the service will store your content (including iTunes music) in the cloud and push it to all of your devices. It will support up to 10 devices and when you add a new contact, take a new photo, or make another kind of update, it will automatically be pushed to the cloud.
