With the dawn of the internet, a lot of things have changed. One of these things is how people and businesses in a variety of industries market themselves! Do they have a portfolio of sites they have made in the past? Are any of these sites in a similar industry as the one I am looking to build? These are a few VERY important questions to ask yourself before you put down the deposit and start work on your website. Your website is YOUR lifeline to survive online and the item that requires the most thought is the design of the site. Features and architecture are great for a website (to a certain extent) but any type of visitor will be noticing the design and layout of your website first.
Tip: If their website looks good, they have portfolio that looks great, and they seem to have designed websites in a similar industry to yours?..then they may be a good fit!
2. Knowledge
If someone?s going to work for your business or corporation (for all you bosses out there), you are obviously going to want someone that knows about his job. For someone to come in and place your business on the online world and do a good job, they are going to need to understand a lot more than just the colors that you like. They need to have a general idea of the services you offer, how you brand yourself offline, and the process of how your business operates on a daily basis.
Tip: If someone can understand what you do and how you do it, then they can definitely design and develop something that will really help your business. Having someone knowledgeable about web design is a necessity but having someone that can understand exactly how you work will do your websites design wonders! A good way to make sure your designer really has a clue about your company is by asking him simple questions that will have him explain the process!
3. Comfort
When you are speaking and meeting with your web designer, it is often a good idea to feel comfortable and at home with them. Not in the sense where you are taking off your pants and dancing around, but at the sense where you and the designer can share things at a friendly level. A web designer is way more than someone just offering you a service, they are actually expanding and growing your business on a whole new plateau! They are that short term partner that is leading the transition to a whole new world till you get acquainted with things.
Tip: People always say ?I really had a bad feeling about this guy?.? after they have just been conned. Truth be told, if you don?t get a good impression and solid gut feeling from your designer, then chances are you will be disappointed at the end of it. Be comfortable with whoever is helping you with the design of your site!
4. Competition
No matter who tells you to not worry about the competition and just do things your way, it is extremely CRUCIAL to watch your competitor websites at all times. Before the design process begins, you should take an in-depth look at what your competitors do well and are missing from their online website. Since you are following in their footsteps and still have a blank canvas to work with, it is ALWAYS recommended to create something that will amaze. If your design can make your visitors/potential customers go ?wow??.then your website has almost already sold your product or service. Websites work a lot like shopping at the mall, you see an amazing demonstration and your already ready to ?impulse buy?. Websites work the same way, if your website is far more superior than your competitors?.then you already have the upper hand without having to put in any time or effort.
Tip: It?s always a good idea to take what the others do well and improve on what the others do not have or lack. Using your competitors as your primary example is the BEST way to do this because you are researching what they do and bettering yourself through it!
5. Simplicity Is Bliss
Doing something extravagant really ends up biting you in the tail. The online world wants to see a few things before they are convinced that you are the perfect choice for whatever need they have that can be fulfilled by your website. If you have a solid website that is straight to the point and offers a solution to their problem or need through its design, you will be generating long term revenue from your site! Overdoing it can often times scare away your traffic which will negatively affect your income!
Tip: When someone visits your website, within the first 5 seconds they should be able to visually gather a few pieces of vital information. By just looking at your website, they should be able to know exactly what you do, how you do it, and how they can get your services or products right away! If your website has too much jazz, people will be lost in the jazz and leave without having a clue of what your website does, so that?s why its crucial to be simple!
Apart from employing these web design strategies, there are lots of other techniques that can be used to design a successful website. These are just a few recommendation of the most influential factors that go into the design of your online website!
